For people that aren’t familiar, True Blood is an HBO show based totally on a series of books called The Southern Vampire perplexities by Charlaine Harris. The book and the series follows an alternative fact where not only are vampires real, but following the discovery of manmade blood, vampires have come out of the closet, some needing to live a more unexceptional life. The series occurs in the small Louisiana city of Bon Temps and follows the main character, Sookie Stackhouse, a psychic waitress who finds herself drawn to the town’s new vampire resident, as he’s the one individual in the town whose mind she cannot read.

The Good :

The Southern town of Bon Temps provides a fun background for this story. Take out the vampires, and you still have a whole town full of colorful characters, shape shifters, exorcisms and other bizarre goings on. I’m also excited about the premise of the story with the idea of vampires fighting for equality and some even mainstreaming.

The Bad :

Notwithstanding a fascinating grounds and a cool backdrop for the story, season one still relied on too many familiar motifs. The Sookie-Bill-Sam love triangle rang a touch too near to the Edward-Bella-Jacob eventuality in Twilight. Sookie often comes off as a small flighty as she bounces between Sam and Bill’s attention, and to be truthful, in the first season, I never actually saw any reason why we should care about Sookie and Bill’s relationship apart from the incontrovertible fact that according to the script, “they’re meant to be together.”

The vamps on the show were a little hardly interesting through the first part of the season. They either wished to reform and were therefore completely lifeless, like Bill, or they were stuck in some seventies or goth version of being a vampire.

In 2008 HBO will air the TV series True Blood ( provisionally booked for March ) based mostly on the Southern Vampire mysteries.

1. Though you are the author of the Southern Vampire puzzles you’ve had to turn over creative control to Alan Ball ( producer of 6 Feet Under ). You glaringly have a lot of confidence in him, but how were you able to let go of your own creation?

It won’t be my creation any more when it’s on TV. It will be Alan’s creation, and a completely different animal. I’m anticipating seeing the books from a totally different standpoint.

2. Producer Alan Ball is keen on the Southern Vampire enigmas. What information have you shared with him on developing the characters, particularly Sookie.

I think all the sharing I want to do is right there in the text. When I was attempting to decide who to go with, of the offers in front of me, Alan was the one who convinced me he understood what I was doing with the books.

3. Have you made any recommendations for the True Blood stories? Will any of the books be a foundation for an episode?

The pilot episode is Chapter One of Book One, “Dead until Dark.” The plan now is to follow the books chronologically.

4. Has filming begun? Have you been on the set, and if so what was it like for you?

Filming starts June 7 ( 2007 ), last I heard. I’ve been on the set although it was still being built, and I have met some of the production crew. With no exceptions, they struck me with their questions, their interest, and their understanding of the books.

5. What do you think of the actors who’ve been cast? What do you suspect they will bring to their roles?

I am assured that Alan and his casting director have picked the right people for the right roles.
