One of the leading causes of infertility and conception problems in women is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. The over production of insulin is a major reason why PCOS occurs. This can result in women’s bodies trying to counteract the insulin by beginning to produce androgens or male hormones. Naturally this affects the body in many different ways, one of which is infertility and so it can be very hard getting pregnant with PCOS.
There are also other effects which are a result of PCOS. As every woman is different, the symptoms and effects felt from PCOS also differ from woman to woman. There are some symptoms which are commonly experienced by PCOS sufferers, and these include the development of type two diabetes, weight gain or obesity, pain in the pelvis, acne and an increase in hair on the chest back or face as well as thinning head hair. For many women these other symptoms become insignificant when compared with infertility.
A normally menstrual cycle is disrupted by PCOS. During a normal cycle the ovaries will develop a number of follicles on them which contain the eggs. As the it gets closer to ovulation, only one follicle will develop and the egg that emerges from this follicle is the one released in ovulation. This whole process happens in response to a rise on the level of LH, which is a hormone responsible for triggering ovulation. Sufferers of PCOS don’t normally release enough of the hormone to actually bring on ovulation. The upshot is that the follicles that develop in the beginning of the cycle don’t mature, and many develop into cysts. These cysts are the ones which are visible when women get ultrasound testing. “String of pearls” is the name many attribute to the look of these cysts on the ovary. There is also the possibility of the menses being interrupted, or stopping altogether when a woman has PCOS.
Every woman with PCOS is not diagnosed with the condition. It is not fixed in stone that all women who have PCOS will not be able to conceive a child, on the contrary there are those who don’t have trouble getting pregnant with PCOS and can carry a baby to term. It is thought that of women of childbearing age, around 5 or 10 percent suffer from PCOS.
What are some of the solutions and things which can help PCOS sufferers? There are cases where simply loosing excess weight has triggered a hormone re-balance and a successful PCOS management. There are drug treatments available for PCOS, however there is no need to run headlong into a harsh treatment when so many herbal and natural remedies exist for managing PCOS successfully. There are so many drugs available these days, which are given like ‘miracle pills’ that are dolled out for whatever condition we have. Many of these drugs are put on the market without thorough testing of what long-term and intergenerational effects they may have. This is all despite the fact that there is more and more evidence surfacing that these types of drugs can promote cancer.
A dear friend of mine, Candy (for the purposes of this article) had PCOS in childhood. Candy was only diagnosed after she requested some tests from her doctor, even though she had the condition all the way through her teens. She was most concerned that the condition would stop her from having children in later life, as her period had always been irregular. When Candy got the ultrasound done, it showed that she had a very serious case of PCOS. Because she was so concerned she went to see a specialist to see what could be done, and find out if she would still be able to have kids when the time was right. This specialist informed her that despite the PCOS, they could just administer her with drugs when she wanted to have children, even though these are the same drugs that are responsible for women having multiple births and other complications. Well Candy was quite shocked, and never wanted to go back to the ‘drug’ doctor.
As an add-on to that story, Candy had some more tests done not long after to see what was happening in her body, and found out that with a big cleanse, and an adjustment in her diet to include lots of fresh organic produce the PCOS had totally disappeared. Her chances of a pregnancy when the time arrived were just fine.
