Who cares about chemical reagents? I never did — though I knew I should have. I wish I was more hip to the science lingo. I barely passed chemistry and I knew that my lack of interest was short-changing my hire-ability. What could I do? I think most mortals, when confronted with a mouthful like aluminum potassium sulfate reagent ACS would fold up shop and be resigned to fail.

The nobility of chemistry is usually undercut by the anti-intellectual slant alive and kicking in most public schools. Chemistry is a fine pursuit. Somehow I knew it was the kind of field that could make a career. It’s not something most kids, especially in the States, care much about. Now, there is always that one kid who loves chemistry so much he or she decides to make the ubiquitous volcano for the science fair. That’s fair enough — forgive the pun.

No, I think most kids avoid chemistry like the plague. Mathematics is bad enough. All most kids want in the American school system is to be out of school, at home, in front of the boob tube. Sad, but true. We’re not a nation of achievers. But there are exceptions to every broad generalization made at three in the morning.

No, I knew I was missing out on something. Instead of a solid, five-figure salary, I was convinced I was going to make a go of it as a writer. I know. I know. If I had it all over to do again, I would have slapped me in the head and forced me into chemistry. Tutors, after-school study — anything to get good at a scientific field.

Choose wisely, my friend, when it comes to a field of study in college. The world is never kind to people who fail to choose a serious major. Think of all the English majors in the States and think of how the majority of them are doomed to low-paying teaching gigs and waiting tables. It’s the actor’s life for most writers. Chemists, on the other hand only have to worry about one thing: which lab coat am I going to wear today?
